Government Expected to Increase Australian Migration
Due to the efforts made by the Australian government to solve the issue of labour shortages in the country, the annual permanent migrant intake is expected to increase. The intake level for Australian immigration is set to increase from 160,000 to 200,000 visas per year.
Unions and business groups support this increase. At the same time, these groups are of the opinion that the country’s government should not only increase the Australian immigration levels. They stated that an important consideration is how to more effectively deploy the migrants.
The Typical Permanent Migration Intake in Australia
Generally, the permanent migration intake is made up of 2/3 skilled migrants and 1/3 family members of permanent migrants or citizens. Australia Immigration Professionals reported that the skilled portion of the permanent migration intake is made up of a number of other Australian visas. These are the regional, global talent, employer-sponsored, and skilled independent visas.
According to the federal government’s issue paper released ahead of the summit, there are over 70 unique visa programmes. These programmes comprise temporary and permanent visas with various criteria and subcategories for each.
Australia Immigration Professionals reported that the permanent migration intake in Australia might not be sufficient for addressing the short-term workforce shortages.
Migration Remains a Method to Overcome Workforce Shortages
Improving the economy and migration remain key ways to reduce workforce shortages in Australia. The migration programme needs to be sustainable and ambitious. This improved migration programme will allow for more skilled migrants into Australia. In all, this will be good for jobs and the Australian economy.
