Australia Needs Thousands of Infrastructure Workers
Australia has excellent plans to invest in public infrastructure. But a labour shortage might be a limiting factor in the plans. Currently, there are signs of shortages across the workforce. Unfortunately, there is speculation about the demand reaching critical levels. A study done to understand the public infrastructure workforce estimates a lack of about 105,000 roles in 2023. Of the 50 occupations in the infrastructure sector, 34 are likely to be in shortage.
Engineering occupations are primarily at risk of shortage, according to Australia Immigration Professionals. The engineering profession’s senior and experienced positions are likely to be most affected. Other disciplines to be affected are building surveyors and project management professionals, among others.
Australian Regions Likely to be Affected by Labour Shortages
From reports, Australian regions like Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania are at greater risk of labour shortages from 2021-2025. These states are in need of a great workforce. The needed workforce is almost twice the size of the projected supply inside their borders.
Australia Immigration Professionals reported that there must be a labour supply attraction and retention to address the shortfall. Since the situation is critical, creating jobs in Australia is not enough. Instead, there should be a strategic focus on attracting, training and retaining a sustainable workforce. The workforce is said to be willing and capable of taking the available opportunities in the country.
