Australia has been facing some challenges ever since it shut its border during the Covid-19 pandemic. The major difficulty has been the issue of getting enough workers to fill the vacant jobs in the country. This situation has caused negative effects on the economy.

Currently, Australia is ranked as having the second worst skills shortage among the richest countries in the world (after Canada). The Australian government is, thus, reviewing its visa and immigration policies to accommodate more immigrants.

Employers’ Experiences during the Labour Shortage in Australia

From reports, staff shortages in Australia are worse in regional and remote areas. This situation is said to be due to the preference of most foreigners for the beach instead of the bush (i.e., they would rather live in Australia’s large cities, which are situated along the coast). 

Since 80% of seasonal farm labour came from backpackers before the Covid-19 pandemic, this sector is experiencing a hard time as backpackers were asked to return to their home countries during the pandemic.

Due to the lack of people, tonnes of oranges are left to rot in Leeton, three hundred miles west of Sydney.

An orchard owner, Frank Mercuri, is devastated by the acute labour shortage in Australia. He stated that his business had lost about 140,000 pounds of fruit due to this issue.

Australia Immigration Professionals reported that the unemployment rate is at its lowest level in 48 years. Due to this, immigrants are vital to helping fill vacant positions in the country.
